    NEA grants the New England Archivists Distinguished Service Award (DSA) to individuals or institutions who are dedicated to the promotion of NEA objectives and who have made significant contributions to the profession, their institution, NEA and/or the archival community in New England. The award shall reflect the total experience of the awardee(s) and is based upon knowledge, leadership, participation and achievements in the profession.


    Eligibility:

    In selecting those who will receive the award, special weight will be given to archival activities that have had a broad long-term effect. The candidate's contributions will be measured by their broad distribution across all categories and/or an exceptional contribution in one particular area.

    • A recipient need not currently be an NEA member but must be or have been active in the New England region for a significant portion of his/her career.

    • Current voting members of the Executive Board and individuals who have previously received the award are not eligible.

    • An employee or member of an institution that received an institutional award may be awarded an individual Distinguished Service Award.


    Submitting Nominations:

    1. Nominations must be submitted by December 1, 2014. Nominations and supporting materials may be submitted electronically or on paper.

    3. Candidates may be nominated by more than one person.

    4. A nomination must include a letter detailing why the nominator feels the candidate deserves the NEA DSA. Additional materials including, but not limited to a curriculum vitae (resume), publications, work products, course outlines and evaluations, may be submitted but are not required.

    The Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies (JCAS) just announced the publication of their first article. The article, entitled, “A Genealogy of the Lesbian Herstory Archives, 1974-2014” by Rachel F. Corbman is available for download on the main JCAS website: http://elischolar.library.yale.edu/jcas/vol1/iss1/1/.  Molly Dotson served as editor for this submission and Marlyn Miller was copy editor.

    Abstract
    This paper traces the collection development of the Lesbian Herstory Archives, a community based repository founded in 1974. I argue that the collection grew organically as a reflection of a dialogue between an evolving cohort of volunteer archivists and a community of donors. Primarily focusing on the first five years, this paper pinpoints key early decisions made by volunteer archivists. Specifically, I examine the Archives’ early collecting priorities and the introduction of the special collections in 1978. These decisions, I argue, laid the foundation for the Lesbian Herstory Archives and continue to shape it today, forty years later.

    1. TASK FORCE ON STRATEGIC PLANNING
    NEA is writing a new strategic plan for 2015-2020, and we want your input. Volunteer as a member of the Strategic Planning Task Force and help:

         -- identify values, goals, and strategies using feedback from the Membership Survey

    Are you curious about how NEA works? Or are you interested in getting more involved?

    The NEA Executive Board is having their quarterly meeting on Friday, September 19th (a week from today). All NEA members are welcome to attend.

    Attached is the draft agenda for the meeting. The agenda won't be finalized until a day or two before the meeting, but the attached will give you a sense of what topics we'll be discussing.

    The closest public parking option is the Boston Common Garage. Another option is to park at Alewife Station and ride the Red Line in. Suffolk has no general parking available; but if you need accessible parking, please let Jill know ASAP so we can make arrangements.

    When you enter Sargent Hall, sign in with the security desk (you may need to show a photo ID). Straight ahead in the lobby you'll find the elevators, take them up to the sixth floor. Enter the Law Library to your left, and either take the stairs or the library elevator up to the 7th Floor. At the top of the stairs, you should see some signs pointing you toward the Corcoran Room.

    Please join us on September 19, especially if you have any thoughts or ideas on the attached agenda topics.  Hope to see you there!

    The New England Archivists (NEA) Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) Issues Roundtable is pleased to announce a re-boot of its online presence. After deliberation this past summer, in conversation with NEA leadership, the LGBTQ Issues Roundtable has decided to migrate from the previous Google site to a WordPress blog, Queer!NEA (http://neaqrt.wordpress.com/), and an associated Twitter account, @queernea (https://twitter.com/queernea).

     The Queer!NEA blog will serve as an online clearinghouse for roundtable activities and communication. The LGBTQ Issues Roundtable invites submissions of informational items, resource reviews, and longform contributions (either serial or one-time posts); for submission guidelines please visit http://neaqrt.wordpress.com/submissions/. We particularly encourage students and others who wish to gain professional writing experience in the context of a blog platform to consider joining the team!

    The LGBTQ Issues Roundtable is open to all members of NEA regardless of self-identification, and also welcomes participation by those whose circumstances preclude NEA membership. We exist to facilitate the sharing of news related to the history of queer individuals in the archival professions; to promote the development, access, and visibility of collections related to the history of gender, sex, and sexuality, and the experience of LGBTQ individuals; to explore the relationship between the queer community and community and/or institutional archives; to increase the visibility of, and advocate for, the queer membership and allies within NEA; to provide the opportunity for members to discuss issues of sex, sexuality, and gender identity and expression within the workplace; and provide resources and community support for LGBTQ individuals within the profession.

    Those who wish to join the roundtable should email the leadership at queernea@gmail.com. All are welcome to participate at the blog and via Twitter regardless of membership status.

    After the Society of American Archivists (SAA) adopted the Core Values Statement and Code of Ethics (Approved by the SAA Council May 2011) and Code of Ethics for Archivists (Approved by the SAA Council February 2005; revised January 2012) it recognized a need to provide examples to promote their understanding and utilization in both educational and real environments.  So the SAA Committee on Ethics and Professional Conduct (CEPC) is reaching out to you to submit case studies that address the various issues addressed in the Code of Ethics.  Please consider submitting a case study covering one or more of the codes.  You will find the submission form at: http://www2.archivists.org/groups/committee-on-ethics-and-professional-conduct/call-for-case-studies-in-archival-ethics Links to two case study examples are available at the bottom of the webpage.

    NEA and REPS (Roundtable for Early Professionals and Students) are excited to announce an opportunity this fall for NEA members to give back to the archival community.

    On Saturday, September 13, 2014, volunteers will spend the day at the Brookline Historical Society (MA), Connecticut Historical Society (CT), or Norwich University (VT) assisting staff archivists with activities such as rehousing collections, arranging and describing historical materials, or transcribing correspondence. Details of each institution’s projects can be found on REPS website.

    This is a chance to really reach out to our colleagues who need help creating access to collections.
