New England Archivists is proud to announce the relaunch of the NEA Mentoring Program. This year-long program will begin in March 2017. Applications and more information about this popular program are available on the NEA website.

    WHY PARTICIPATE?
The NEA Mentoring Program offers members the opportunity to participate in Mentoring Circles, which are small groups that typically consist of four to six mentees and two mentors. Diverging from the traditional one-on-one mentoring model, the circle model fosters not only mentoring relationships between the mentors and the mentees, but also peer-mentoring relationships among the mentees and the co-mentors.

    Mentoring Circles aim to:
-- Encourage the exchange of experiences, challenges, and opportunities to facilitate goal-setting for career and personal development
-- Build competence and character to reach those goals
-- Foster self-confidence, communication skills, and collective growth.

Mentors and mentees are matched to a circle depending on their interests, goals, and availability. The application process includes an initial survey to determine everyone’s interests and support the initial matching. All participants should be current NEA members able to commit to a full cycle of the program (seven to nine months).

    HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Please visit the NEA Mentoring page on the NEA website to learn more about the program and to apply to join. Applications will be accepted through February 15, 2017, and applicants will receive further information by March 8, 2017.

Help us promote the event by printing and posting the flyer in your staff kitchen or break room. If you have any questions about the program, please contact Membership Committee Co-Chairs Pam Hopkins (psmhopkins@gmail.com) and Heather Mumford (heather_mumford@hms.harvard.edu).

Join the New England Archivists at Tufts University on Friday, January 27th for our third on-site SAA webinar and networking event followed by small group discussions of how to apply the tools and techniques presented in the webinar at your own organization. Light refreshments will be provided.

Introduction to Processing Digital Records and Manuscripts

    Friday, January 27, 2017
    Webinar viewing: 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
    Discussion: 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

The actual steps of processing digital materials are the same as for analog materials—it's how you conduct them that differ. This webinar introduces you to techniques for adapting traditional archival practices to the management of digital archival materials and serves as an introduction to the Arrangement and Description of Electronic Records DAS courses. Upon completion of this course, you'll be able to:
    1) Adapt traditional archival practices to managing electronic records and manuscripts;
    2) Select appropriate tools to use when processing digital records and manuscripts;
    3) Design and develop workflows for accessioning and processing digital records and manuscripts.

This webinar is based in part on Module 2: Processing Digital Records and Manuscripts by J. Gordon Daines III, (Society of American Archivists, 2013). Module2 is part of SAA series Trends in Archives Practice series, which addresses the practical management of archives and manuscript collections in the digital age. (Note: The ebook is single-user license and requires downloading of Adobe Digital Editions). Click here to buy a copy of Module 2.

If you are seeking your DAS certification, or just want to enhance your understanding of working with born digital records, this webinar viewing and networking event is an opportunity to explore the topic at a greatly reduced rate. For those attendees who wish to take the exam, information will be provided at the event for you. Each exam costs $35.00, payable by the attendee to SAA.

    Fees: Students: $5.00  |  NEA Members: $10.00  |  Non-NEA Members: $15.00
Only nine seats still available, so register now.

NEA thanks Tufts University for hosting the third webinar and networking event.

The field of archives is changing every day -- and this is your chance to help shape the evolving profession in the New England region. Your voice counts! Participate in the NEA's annual Membership Survey to help us better serve you and our profession. We are interested in feedback from current members and/or members whose membership has lapsed. Your responses will be completely anonymous.

The survey, which takes about 15 minutes, includes questions about general membership, meetings and events, education/training, NEA roundtables, and how NEA communicates with members. At the end of the survey, current NEA members can enter to win our prize: a free year of membership in NEA.

The survey is open from now until Friday, Jan 6, 2017 at 11:59 pm

    The NEA Membership Committee.

Dear members of New England Archivists

As the year comes to a close, we hope you will consider a contribution to NEA

NEA's increasing range of scholarships and awards assist fellow members attending NEA meetings and provide professional development opportunities in areas such as records management and A/V. These awards and scholarships help to fulfill a core function of our institution; a handful of $25 gifts could give an additional budding or under-employed archivist the chance to grow, network, and serve. Donated funds also help to secure these opportunities for future archivists during all stages of their careers.

Here is NEA's current suite of awards and scholarships for your consideration:
-- Richard W. Hale, Jr. Professional Development Award
-- Richard L. Haas Records Management Award
    --
    Audio/Visual Professional Development Award
-- Susan J. Von Salis Student Meeting and Travel Scholarship
-- NEA Member Meeting and Travel Scholarship

NEA is a registered 503(c)(3) non-profit and your donation is 100% tax-deductible. Giving couldn't be easier. Just follow this link to our donation page: https://newenglandarchivists.org/donate/

Thank you and have a safe and sound holiday season,
    NEA Executive Board
