NEA Member Tour with the Stowe Center Archives

Attention NEA Members! Join the NEA Membership Committee for a tour of The Stowe Center's Archives. The Stowe Center encourages social justice and literary activism by exploring the legacy of Harriet Beecher Stowe and all who advocate hope and freedom then and now.

The Stowe Center for Literary Activism is on the grounds of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s historic house in Hartford, CT. The Stowe Center offers house tours, holds public programs, and houses our archive, library, and material culture objects, available for research by appointment. Our tours explore the historic context Stowe lived within, focusing especially on the Black authors and advocates Stowe used as inspiration for her most famous novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Programs delve into the broader legacy of literary activism, exemplified by our annual Stowe Prize for Literary Activism, awarded to a contemporary author whose written work illuminates a critical social justice issue. Our historic collection focuses mostly on the 19th and early 20th century United States. Collection highlights include correspondence, bound manuscripts, photographs, and other papers related to the prominent and extensive Beecher and Stowe families; material related to anti-slavery efforts; women’s suffrage movement; and fine arts, architecture, and decorative arts.
