New England Archivists seeks volunteers to form the newly-established Inclusion and Diversity Committee, including a committee chair and three committee members. The Inclusion and Diversity Committee (IDC), with the Inclusion and Diversity Coordinator as chair, will lead NEA’s ongoing efforts to build and maintain an inclusive environment, where differences of opinion, beliefs, and values are sought, listened to, respected, and valued. Read a full description of the committee’s responsibilities here.

The initial committee will establish staggered terms: one member will serve one (1) year, one will serve two (2) years, and one will serve three (3) years. The Inclusion and Diversity Coordinator/chair of the committee will serve a three-year term. This is a critical moment in our organizational history to maintain and expand NEA’s commitment to inclusion, diversity, and engagement with social justice concerns both within our professional community and on the national (and world) stage. Whether you are a student, emerging, or seasoned member of New England's archival community, if you have a passion for social justice, this new committee provides a great opportunity to make a tangible difference in your chosen field.

Serving on an NEA committee is also a great way to contribute to our regional archival association, help make decisions that will drive our organization, network with other archivists in the community, and strengthen your professional skills.

If you are interested in joining this vital NEA committee, or know someone who would be a good candidate, please contact the current Inclusion and Diversity Coordinator, Anna Clutterbuck-Cook, at diversity@newenglandarchivists.org. Volunteers will be asked to provide a brief statement of interest and experience so that the board may consider their candidacy. Committee members must exhibit a strong commitment to inclusion and diversity, demonstrating knowledge of the issues and personal and/or workplace experience with social justice advocacy. First-time volunteers are encouraged to apply.

    Dear New England Archivists members:

The field of archives is changing every day -- and this is your chance to help shape the evolving profession in the New England region. Participate in the NEA's annual Membership Survey to help us better serve you and our profession. We are interested in feedback from current members and/or members whose membership has lapsed. Your responses will be completely anonymous.

The survey, which takes about 15 minutes, includes questions about general membership, meetings and events, education/training, NEA roundtables, and how NEAcommunicates with members. At the end of the survey, current NEA members can enter to win our prize: a free year of membership in NEA!

The survey is open from now until Friday, Jan 6, 2017 at 11:59 pm. The NEA Membership Committee thanks you for your participation.

You can access it by logging into the member portal.

New England Archivists (NEA) and the Archivists Round Table of Metropolitan New York (A.R.T.) invite submissions of session proposals for our joint Spring Meeting, to be held March 22 - 24, 2018, in New Haven, Connecticut. The deadline for proposals is September 10, 2017.

With the theme “Rise Up,” the Spring 2018 Meeting will focus on concepts of archival advocacy. How can archivists better demonstrate the cultural value and social urgency of their work? What kinds of advocacy can help amplify awareness and bolster support for archival repositories within established institutions? How can best practices evolve to include the stories, traditions, and record-keeping methods of people and communities who are traditionally underrepresented in archival spaces? Sessions, workshops, and plenary speakers will explore the personal, professional, and political implications of archival advocacy, particularly in regard to social justice efforts, economic challenges, activist tactics, and career sustainability for individuals within the archival field. First-time presenters, current graduate students, early-career professionals, and those doing archival work in community-centered contexts are all strongly encouraged to submit proposals.

    ----

The Spring 2018 Program Committee invites proposals on all topics but is especially interested in sessions that:

    • Share successful tools archivists can use to bolster internal and external advocacy efforts within their institutions, among emerging communities, and to the general public, including strategies for elevating awareness about the value of archival work and special collections
    • Explore how intersectionality, allyship, and radical empathy can impact all aspects of archival work, particularly collection development, arrangement and description, and outreach
    • Discuss methods for personal advocacy that archivists can use to build a stronger sense of professional agency, develop and advance their ideas through clear communication, and foster more equitable, respectful, and supportive relationships with colleagues at every level
    • Incorporate participatory elements that engage attendees and provide actionable knowledge to empower individuals and institutions to adapt their practices to be more inclusive, effective, and transparent
    • Detail collaborative efforts among archivists, institutions, regional organizations, and communities, especially those striving to capture ephemeral forms of documentation
    • Present cross-disciplinary perspectives on archival work, particularly in relation to the development of community archives, political activism, skillshares between archivists and non-archivists, and guerrilla archivist work done in non-institutional contexts
    • Examine how the development, maintenance, and implementation of archival descriptive standards can affect concepts of professional neutrality, historical representation within the archive, and expanded access to materials
    • Facilitate conversations surrounding oppressive power structures and the ethics of authority with regard to the historical functions of archival institutions
    • Highlight work being done to address archival silences, especially regarding materials related to LGBTQIA, indigenous, and carceral communities and in the areas of social justice including racial, labor, disability, economic, reproductive health, and climate issues
    • Focus on the rich histories of people, movements, and organizations in the Connecticut and metropolitan New York City regions

    Possible Session Types

    Standard Presentations
Two or three speakers present on a common theme. May include a moderator to steer discussion and/or introduce speakers and theme.

    ----

To facilitate collaboration, the Spring 2018 Program Committee has created a space for NEA and A.R.T members to develop session proposals together: http://tinyurl.com/NEASpring2018collab

    To all NEA members:

You are invited to attend the NEA Executive Board meeting Thursday, March 23rd from 1:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the Resort and Conference Center at Hyannis. You can access the meeting's agenda on the NEA website. The agenda for the NEA Business Meeting on Saturday, March 25th also at the Resort and Conference Center at Hyannis is available on the website.

Unable to attend in person? NEA is committed to making our board meetings open to all members. If you would like to request remote access to part or all of the meeting, please contact the Inclusion and Diversity Coordinator, Anna Clutterbuck-Cook  (diversity@newenglandarchivists.org) and we will do what we can to accommodate your request. You can always access board meeting minutes on the NEA website.

    FREE WORKSHOP: BYSTANDER INTERVENTION TRAINING
    Thursday, March 23rd | 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. | Resort and Conference Center at Hyannis

After the Executive Board meeting on Thursday, all NEA Spring 2017 Meeting attendees and workshop participants are invited to attend a free bystander intervention training session with Independence House, Inc., Cape Cod’s leading resource, counseling and advocacy center to address and prevent domestic and sexual violence. In conjunction with the new Code of Conduct, this training session will help NEA create a culture of active engagement around issues of harassment, giving our membership the confidence to address situations in the moment – perhaps even before they get to the level of a formal complaint.

These skills are also transferable to your work environment and community beyond your professional life. In this political moment when people from marginalized groups are experiencing a rise in aggressive, hateful words and actions, equipping yourself to actively address such incidents before they escalate is a valuable act of solidarity

Anyone interested can RSVP online. For any questions, please contact Anna Clutterbuck-Cook, Inclusion and Diversity Coordinator at diversity@newenglandarchivists.org
